TSAVO
This park is the largest in Kenya and is actually divided into two parts for adminstrative purposes - Tsavo East which covers an area of 11,747 sq kms, and Tsavo West which is 9065 sq kms.
The park lies in the south of Kenya bordering Northern Tanzania and combines well with a safari to Amboseli or a beach holiday in Mombasa.
TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK
This is the larger of the two, closer to Nairobi and bordered by the Nairobi-Mombasa road/railway and the Tanzanian border. This is home of the legendary infamous Tsavo man-eating lions, the Tsavo is the park through which the Railway was built in the 1890's.
Amongst the parks attractions are the Yatta plateau – It is about 290Km long and is one of the worlds longest lava flows. The Lugards Falls on the Galana river – not really a waterfalls but a series of rapids. Visitors can walk down to the river to view the rapids. The Mudanda Rock – This is a long rock outcrop that is about 1.6Km long. There is a dam at the base where wildlife come to drink. Visitors can walk along the rock and enjoy a cool breeze as well as view wildlife at the base. The Aruba Dam - was built in 1952 across the Voi River. The dam attracts many animals and water birds. The Tsavo and Athi rivers confluence – when the two rivers join they form the Galana River.
TSAVO WEST NATIONAL PARK
This park is bordered by the Nairobi-Mombasa road to its north and the Tanzanian border with Tanzania's Mkomazi Game Reserve to the south.
Tsavo West has a more varied topography and a more diverse array of habitats than Tsavo East. The park's habitats include open plains alternating with Savannah bush and semi desert scrub, acacia woodlands; rocky ridges and outcrops and more extensive ranges and isolated hills; belts of riverine vegetation; palm thickets and on the Chyulu hills, a dense mountain forest.
There are numerous rocky outcrops and ridges and part of the park, towards the Chyulu Hills, is of recent volcanic origin with lava flows and ash cones including the Shetani lava flow, an example of a recent volacano.
In the far south western corner on the Kenya-Tanzania border is Lake Jipe, part of which is in the park. This very attractive lake is fed by run-off from Mt. Kilimanjaro and the North Pare (Usambara) mountains.
At Mzima Springs, in the North of the park, water that has filtered underground from the Chyulu Hills gushes from below a lava ridge into a series of clear pools.
Tsavo West is easy to get to from Mombasa, and Tsavo East is closer to Nairobi, a couple of hours drive away from either city, and makes for a nice safari-beach combination holiday or for those seeking a short safari whilst spending more time at the beach.
One can access these parks by road, air or railway. Contact us for more information on a safari to Tsavo.
