Shira Route  
The third most popular route, involving a complete mountain transverse and absolutely breathtaking views including those of the icial glaciers. The walking is quite strenuous and usually takes a minimum of 7 days. Accomodation is in caves and tents.

A typical itinerary using the SHIRA route:
Day 1: Arusha to Londorossi gate o/n campsite.
Day 2: Wilderness camp o/n campsite.
Day 3: Circuit of Shira plateau o/n Shira hut (3840m).
Day 4: Via Barranco (3950m) for a late lunch and on to Karanga valley. o/n Barafu Hut (4600m). 11 hours
Day 5: Across the saddle to Kibo hut campsite (4725m). 3 hours
Day 6: Uhuru peak and down to Mweka hut campsite (3100m). 8+6 hours
Day 7: To Mweka Gate (3-4hrs) and transfer to Arusha
